a bit about us...
In 2008 artist-owned Garry Oak Gallery opened to become Oak Harbor's first major co-op gallery and a part of the vibrant Whidbey Island art community. With a dedicated group of more than twenty-five established and emerging local artists, Garry Oak Gallery brings new and original works of art on display to the delight of both locals and visitors. As one of many Whidbey Island art galleries, Garry Oak Gallery provides a unique balance of both high-end fine art as well as a generous supply of easily affordable art work. We also carry note cards that feature our artists' work. Read more here about the founding of our art gallery. Come on in! At least one of our artists is always in the gallery, and he or she would love to talk with you about your art desires. We are open daily from 10:30 am until 5:30 pm with extended hours in summer. Please browse our website and see what our many local artists are creating and showing at our gallery! We'd love to know what you think so give us your feedback by clicking here. |

Meet ... Pat McVay, Wood Sculpture Artist
Pat McVay's history in the arts goes back 30 years to Paris, where he began his career. Currently, most of his work is large-scale carvings from already-downed trees, using everything from a chain saw to fine chisels. His whimsical and even comical sense is often the basis of unique carvings of people and animals. Many of his works are visible in public spaces up and down the West Coast. The Giant Acorn recently installed and on public display on Pioneer Way was sculpted from a piece of the 400-year-old Garry Oak Tree formerly located at the Post Office by Pat who submitted the winning design. The sculpted wooden acorn is ringed by images of habitat species that might be found within the Garry Oak ecosystem, which Pat carved into the supporting base. A special metal plate in the shape of an oak leaf was made to help disperse the sculpture's weight because engineers feared the 2,800-pound sculpture might buckle the sidewalk. A cluster of three giant metal oak leaves forming an awning will be installed over the sculpture to protect it from weather will be installed at a later date.
This beautiful sculpture can be seen on Pioneer Way and other pieces of his are on display at the Garry Oak Gallery.
