| Barbara Lyter My formal training in fine art has taken me to the exploration of many different media. I became a photographer for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1987. It was there that my love of textiles began. It was not until the early 90ʼs that I turned from my primary medium of photography to branch out and begin painting on silk and producing neckties. I launched On the Surface (art you can use) in October of 2010 as a secondary business to my graphic design and commercial photography business, Photo+Graphics. The success of On the Surface became apparent during the holiday season. I now merge my photographic art and textile art to produce one-of-a-kind fiber art. The photography helps provide the inspiration from nature and the photography of my own work. I love the tactile sensibility of fiber which includes any material made from fiber including paper. It is such a broad range of media that lends itself so well to mixed media pieces. My work is drawn from a lifetime in fine art and I enjoying exploring new techniques. I studied with Jane Dunnewold and Gail Harker last summer and have found their classes to be a turning point in my development. I dye my fabric specifically for the piece. Unless I am doing home textiles such as place mats and napkins to match, then I will dye yardage. My inspiration stems from my studies of the masters such as Kandinsky, Klee, Miroʼ, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and the cave paintings at Lascaux, Altamira and Chauvet. I also love and am inspired by Australian Aboriginal art. |
