Cedar Baskets & Jewelry
Artist Biography:
I have always lived in the beautiful San Juan Islands of Washington.
My jewelry career began in college doing lost wax casting. I have done some kind of artwork all my life, mostly jewelry until 12 years ago. My husband is a member of the Samish Indian Nation in Anacortes and we both became more interested in the culture and traditions of the Samish Tribe. We really enjoyed the cedar bark weaving classes provided by the Tribe. We then began going to basket weaving conferences to enrich our skills and to learn new techniques. I love to add beads or weave designs into the baskets. My husband and I go into the forest to procure the bark which he cleans and prepares for weaving. The bark must age for a year before we can begin using it. We come up with our own patterns.
Living on the waterfront of Fidalgo Island with all its beauty and diversity has inspired my basket weavings and jewelry in the way that I use colors and combining the stones, coral, silver and fossilized walrus ivory into my creations. My inspirations also come from the rich colors of the sky, water, nature and beautiful sunsets.
We have my husbands great grandfathers berry basket and hope that our creations will also be passed on to our future generations.
