Mike O'Connell is a self taught artist and has been painting since 1997. He originally worked in oils but switched to acrylics around 2003 after a long illness. His 36”x36” glyph filled orbs have won awards and ribbons in several shows and fairs including an honorable mention at the Puyallup fair in 2007 and a blue ribbon at the Island County Fair last year for the work titled “Ground Zero”.
Mike is currently creating a series of smaller text paintings and collages, most of them centered around symbols and languages from around the world. The text paintings involve an imaginary woman named Helen who moves from adventure to adventure, from one painting to the next. These works use text streams that have no line breaks, few corrections, and session specific subject matter. The pieces that use hanging bells, beads, and misc. objects are intended to have multiple rolls as art objects, chimes, mirrors, and conversation starters.
Born in 1948 in Whitefish, Mt. Mike has lived Oak Harbor for nearly 20 years.
