Artist Bio:
My life as an artist began as soon as I could hold a crayon. I was always drawing on paper, cardboard, my skin and on condensed windows. I was adopted by people who had some artistic talent, and they gave me every opportunity, every lesson, every advantage the could afford. Drawing, painting and sculpture were my earliest mediums. I attended the University of Cincinnati and majored in fashion design. From there I went to Wittenberg and studied painting and pottery. I spent a year in NYC majoring in fashion design before returning to Ohio where I received my diploma with a dual degree in Fine Arts and English from the University of Dayton. I exhibited my paintings in a galllery in San Francisco for a short time before my marriage. I did stained glass for several years in Los Angeles and Seattle, but with the birth of my busy boys I took up needlecraft and became an interior decorator, which I gave up due to the stress involved. For a number of years I painted and decorated denim coats and outfits and was in the best craft shows in Washington. Then I finally settled on pottery about 28 years ago. For many years I enjoyed making pottery until it became repetitive, which to an artist can be soul killing. I laid it down for a year and then had the idea of doing gnomes. They have been very popular and I personalize them with bios and make seasonal ones as well. I also love doing mosaics. I enjoy the wide selection of materials, the sheer beauty of the shimmering tiles, the play of light and the joy of tackling a new project thrills me. I love making cards too. There are so many ways to decorate, paint, print and layer cards, that I never get tired of exploring new ways to embellish them. My latest forray has been to use paper clay and make beautiful ornaments. I plan on continuing with seasonal ornaments. For several years I taught art at a Christian school. teaching the lower grades up to seniors. It was most challenging as I was kept on my toes seeking out interesting and innovating ideas to challenge their imagination. |
After moving to Whidbey I joined the Co-op in Langley and also had my art in a gallery in La Conner. I joined the Washington Allied Artist two yars ago and continue to have my art exhibited at the Lucky Dumpster in Bow-Ed.
I live on a cove on an island in the Pacific Northwest and find that nature in general, and the beach, in particular influence so much of my artwork. I have recently started painting pictures on furniture, as the cost of canvas was too steep. I love to paint and am thrilled to be ble to take up paint and brush again. I am most happy when creating. If I have any art philosophy, it is to bring beauty into the world, I strive to beautify all I lay my hand to. |
